REVIEW:  Black Hat/White Hat:  A Tale of Good is Evil by Glen Della-Monica

Is good evil, or is evil good?  That’s the crux of Black Hat/White Hat:  A Tale of Good is Evil by Glen Della-Monica.

There are three main characters in this book:  Alex and Lara Cutter, the married purveyors of crime, and FBI Special Agent Cody Smutters, who is tasked with finding Alex and Lara and bringing them to justice. The story weaves around a series of minor crimes — minor if you’re not the victim, that is.  But can you really consider them victims?  These are telemarketing scammers who rip off the old and vulnerable — the bane of every phone owner in the world.  What Alex and Lara do to them could actually  be considered a public service.

Back at the FBI, Cody is in charge of the task force investigating these crimes, but his investigation cues him that something far more nefarious may be going on.  Alas, he’s restricted to investigating only his assigned cases.  Still, like a dog with a bone, he continues to follow the clues on the down low.

All the characters in Black Hat/White Hat are likeable, regardless of which side of the law they are on.  I found myself rooting for Alex and Lara.  Sure they’re sociopaths, but they’re loving sociopaths who find joy in their work.  But, at the same time, I was also rooting for Cody, whose doggedness could be the downfall of Alex and Lara.  Argh!  What a dilemma!

The reader is also introduced to a number of supporting characters, both good and bad.  To Glen Della-Monica’s credit, he has created a plethora of characters that have depth and intelligence, making each realistically interesting in their own right — not flat and one-dimensional characters which can be the death knell of an otherwise good story.

Black Hat/White Hat starts out as almost two separate narratives, with seemingly nothing in common, but as the stories progress, the original focus expands, and the reader sees how the two stories bump up against one another, and the main characters enter the periphery of each other’s lives.  It’s complex, interesting, and well-written.

If you like crime books, you will enjoy this book.  If you like smart characters, you will enjoy this book.  If you like multi-layered stories, you will enjoy this book.  There’s a hint at the end of the story that could lead to a sequel.  I’d happily read that!

[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of “Black Hat/White Hat: A tale of Good is Evil” by Glenn Della-Monica.]

4 out of 4 stars

Black Hat/White Hat by Glenn Della-Monica is a thrilling crime-fiction book that centers on exposing and punishing criminals. Alex and Lara’s fascination with becoming assassins becomes a reality after saving a mobster. He later hires the couple and offers them anti-scamming jobs, which is to bring down cybercriminals by using an unorthodox method. However, their intentions are not inherently malicious. FBI Special Agent Cody sets to unravel the mystery behind the actions of these two sociopaths. Unknown to Cody, the case may prove bigger than he first presumed. Will Cody eventually apprehend these two loved international assassins? Or will he accept their actions as truly exposing miscreants and benefitting the public? I urge you to follow up with this intriguing book to find out Cody’s choice.

This book focuses On Alex and Lara, who develop a sense of outrage toward nefarious men and the urge to punish these criminals. This plot makes it so book-worthy and addictive. This book has lots of positive aspects. The humorous tone made it enjoyable and entertaining. You will find it difficult to remove your attention from this book once you pick it up. The gruesome scenes are not presented as scary or sad but rather in a funny manner. This book teaches us that there is always a retributive justice against different types of criminals.

Furthermore, Black Hat/White Hat was a book that showcased the knowledge and expertise of the author in specific subject matters. The conversations on the differences between the categories of hackers kept me engaged. I would never have imagined how to detect a scammer, but this book exposed me to it, which I really valued. This book would also enlighten anybody who reads it against criminal behaviors.

The references to some quotes to prove the characters’ points were charming. The importance of family and loyalty were also emphasized, which was soothing. I have to commend the author for the challenging and smart discussion at the end, which had a lasting impression on me.

I did not find any negative aspects in this book. It was well written with exceptional editing. It was an enlightening, exciting, and funny book. I do not hesitate to rate this book four out of four stars. This is because of the compelling characters and their diversities. This book doesn’t only concentrate on crimes but also romance, betrayal, and family, adding to its charms. I also loved the unpredictability and unique plot twists.

Anyone who enjoys crime and detective books will want to read this book. There is nothing to hinder any teenager from liking this book or picking it up either.

If you have ever dreamed of taking revenge on a robo caller or on the person who keeps sending you scam emails, than this book is for you! Black Hat/ Whit Hat is a fast paced, action packed well written novel , that follows the lives of Alex and Lara Cutter , who primarily spend their days seeking revenge on cyber criminals. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this book, it is outside of my usual genres, but it hooked me from the very beginning and kept me intrigued until the very end, when I was hit with a twist I never saw coming! Without saying too much, I’m hoping based on the ending that there will be a sequel, because I would definitely love to see what is next for these characters! I voluntarily read and reviewed a gifted copy of this book, all opinions are my own.

This is quite a book! You’re supposed to root for the good guy, right? But who’s good and who’s bad? Is it ok to do illegal (and maybe really violent) things for the better good? Is it ok to kill people in order to save others? To do bad things to criminals and ensure the criminal is punished not just by you, but by the police? The various threads of the story intertwine in a great overall book. I enjoy the various characters, even the law-breaking ones, to my embarrassment. There’s definitely more violence than I prefer, and I have a natural fear of hit men, the Mafia, etc. But it all makes a really good story and I highly recommend it. I was provided a copy of the book, but these opinions are my own.

This book is amazing! You are grabbed from the first page and never let go. A wild ride that keeps you turning pages and wondering, when is evil good and good is evil. We are introduced in the beginning to our main characters, a very intelligent couple, Lara and Alex who are extremely adept at research and clandestine actions. Their biggest peeve are those scammers who scam unwitting people from their money and so they decide to take their revenge. Working alone they did just that. They didn’t kill anyone only exacted revenge. But when they entered the Paul Lenetti’s house, they were not alone. It seemed another mafia family, was there to kill the Lenetti family and Lara and Alex were able to stop them from killing the family and their grandchildren. So now, what was like a hobby to Alex and Lara, their revenge creed, they can now put into practice since the Lenetti family through their right hand man, Siggy being the contact, Papa Paul Lenetti gave the couple a change to take their revenge and put them on a payroll although they vowed they would not kill anyone. And so the world wide escapades begin. They are always steps ahead of the FBI team of Cody and Dr. Haley. With so many twists and turns and a surprise ending, you will find yourself cheering for the bad hoping the good does not catch them! If you like something totally different, fast paced and page turning this is your book! I received and ARC but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.

“Black Hat/White Hat” is the action-packed story of two lovable sociopaths, Alex and Lara Cutter. It is also the story of the law enforcement officials who try to catch them. The story moves quickly as it covers the Cutters origin story, their exploits, and the efforts of FBI officer Cody and his colleagues as they try to uncover the identities of the culprits. There is a lot going on in this book. The major focus is on the elaborately planned actions of Alex and Lara. I appreciated seeing all the details that are considered in order to pull off each scheme. If you enjoy intricately-plotted covert actions, you will absolutely love this book. It was also interesting to see the story from the other side, that of law enforcement in multiple countries trying to track down the mysterious people or group behind the string of bizarre events. (The intricacy and level of detail put into this book was truly impressive. After reading this book, as well as the author’s bio, I am definitely glad that he decided to put his knowledge and experience to work for good instead of evil!) Character development never takes a back seat to the action. Main characters Alex/Lara, Cody, and Haley are each provided with enough background and unique personality traits to seem like true individuals. The reader can easily understand each person’s mindset, and this makes the choices they make and actions they take seem entirely realistic. There was a surprise near the end that I didn’t see coming. I won’t say more to avoid spoilers, but I loved the way things came together. I also liked the semi-open ending, and hope that it means more adventures to follow in future books. This book is much more than just an exciting adventure novel, however. It also gives the reader something important to think about, both during the reading and afterwards. What truly is good or evil? How does the motivation behind an action affect the rightness of that action? How much should long term benefits offset short-term “bad” actions? If you’re familiar with the DeathNote series, this book provides more to ponder about the good vs. evil dynamic. Overall, an exciting, fast-paced, incredibly well-written story!
